Planting Cassava Seedlings
On April 22nd, we planted cassava seedlings in the field of Kumagaya Agricultural High School. Thirteen students worked efficiently under the guidance of their teachers, finishing planting over 60 pots in less than two hours. Latu, President of the NPO, participated in the work with his wife. These small seedlings will grow to over one meter tall by summer and reach about two meters in height by harvest time. In the fall, we plan to use the cassava harvesting activity as an opportunity for exchange between Tongan people and high school students. Incidentally, cassava is known as the raw material for tapioca, but in Tonga, it is a staple food. It is eaten roasted or steamed.
